EDIBLE GARDEN

Rich pickings

Design and build constraints:

  • Ornamental and edible garden surrounding a greenhouse

  • To hold visual appeal throughout the year, especially during winter

  • Easy to care for plants

Painted Fern Garden Design were asked to design the borders surrounding a classic greenhouse. The borders were edged with new hedging to make the growing area a self-contained garden room within the wider landscaped garden.

Planting was a mixture of ornamentals, edimentals and edibles. Typical vegetables plants were mixed with more unusual edibles adding structure throughout the year, such as Eriobotrya japonica (Japanese loquat), Acca sellowiana (pineapple guava), Olive europea (olive) and Laurus noblis angustifolia (narrow leaved bay). All now possible to grow well with our warming climate.
